NKFXXIII Congress
Resilience
Adapting heritage preservation to future challenges
Welcome to the NKF XXIII congress in Copenhagen, Denmark,
3-4 of October 2024
This congress would not be possible without the kind support from our partners and sponsors:
Direktør Michael Hermann Nielsens Mindelegat managed by the City of Copenhagen
NKF-Denmark has the pleasure to invite you to the 23rd triennial NKF Congress:
Resilience: Adapting heritage preservation to future challenges.
The congress will be held on the 3-4 of October 2024 at The National Museum of Denmark, Copenhagen, with an opening reception on the 2 of October.
The congress will set focus on preservation ethics, practices and goals, and how we can adapt these to more resilient practices in a rapidly changing world. We would like to offer space for a broad discussion on the practices in cultural heritage preservation; how does the field adapt to changes in climate and biodiversity, community engagement, international political structures, colonial dynamics and other contemporary issues. Furthermore, we would like to broaden the discussion on how heritage preservation can contribute to a change of conduct amongst people, institutions, and society.
The 23rd triennial NKF Congress aims at showcasing the newest research topics in heritage preservation in the IIC-Nordic Group and likewise invites international researchers to bring their knowledge to northern Europe. We believe in the importance of inclusion and sharing with our communities and gaining new perspectives from it. The session themes of the congress are:
RESOURCES & SUSTAINABILITY

CO-CREATION & COLLABORATION

KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Kim Kraczon
The Socio-environmental Burden of Materials in the Preservation and Presentation of Cultural Heritage.
The impact of our material consumption in the cultural heritage sector extends beyond the carbon footprint, necessitating a nuanced examination of the environmental and humanitarian ramifications of our material choices.
Kim Kraczon is a conservator of modern materials and contemporary art specializing in sustainable practices in the art sector. Her area of expertise and primary focus in the field of sustainability is mitigating the environmental burden of materials and methods in conservation, art production, exhibition-making, and fine arts shipping.
KEYNOTE SPEAKER
Suzie Thomas
Remembering or reconciling with violent pasts: Can all dark heritage be decolonised?
Discussion about and research of dark heritage often presents more questions than solutions. It is important for conservation professionals to consider the potentially charged nature of objects and structures with which they work. Considering the current debates in and attempts to implement decolonising approaches to both the academy and to the heritage sector, the keynote talk questions whether this is always possible. If it is not possible to decolonise all dark heritage, what are the implications for research and for society?
Suzie Thomas is a Professor of Heritage Studies at the University of Antwerp, Belgium. She teaches on subjects such as participatory approaches in heritage work, 'dark' heritage, public archaeology and heritage crime, to students in Heritage Studies and in Conservation and Restoration. Her research interests focus on the work and ontologies of Heritage Practice Communities, and on the heritagisation processes associated with sites of violence and trauma.
